What the tiers mean
Foundation and Higher papers assess overlapping mathematical ideas but differ in their available grades and the balance of question difficulty. The right tier is an individual decision, not a label of ability.
How to think about the choice
Consider the grade needed for the student’s next step, current evidence from classwork and assessments, confidence under exam conditions, and the school’s professional advice.
Aiming for the highest possible tier is not automatically the best strategy. A realistic route that supports steady progress can be more productive.
Build the underlying maths
Whichever tier is chosen, fluency in number, algebra, ratio, geometry and statistics matters. Focus on understanding relationships rather than memorising isolated steps.
